What Constitutes a Pet Medical Emergency?
Sometimes pets get sick or lethargic, or something seems a little “off” with their health. You know your pet better than anyone, so you probably recognize it instantly when your pet is not feeling well. Sometimes you can wait a day or two and see whether the symptoms resolve. But when is this an actual medical emergency?
All of the following events or incidents should be considered medical emergencies. If your pet experiences any of these, call our office immediately, and we will instruct you on any next steps as you transport your pet to our clinic.
- Bleeding that lasts more than five minutes, either from an animal attack, auto accident, or another type of injury
- Bloody diarrhea or vomiting
- Ingesting a foreign object
- Swallowing a toxic or poisonous substance
- Losing consciousness or sudden collapse
- Pain or swelling in the abdomen
- Pet has trouble urinating
- Seizures, disorientation, or foaming at the mouth
Emergency Vet Services We Provide
We have a caring and compassionate staff that is here to assist your pet in a medical emergency. We are committed to providing your pet with the best quality care possible during their stay with us.
Dr. Hawley and the rest of the time provide the latest diagnostic, medical, and surgical care for animals suffering from an emergency. We provide the following services as needed when you bring your pet to us for emergency care.
Stitching and Wound Care
If your pet is bleeding from an open wound, we clean it, treat the wound with antibiotics or other necessary medicines, and stitch it close to stop profuse bleeding.
Blood Work
Taking a blood sample and analyzing it in our lab is often the quickest way to diagnose some medical emergencies. Blood work may be the only way to diagnose the problem if your pet has swallowed a poisonous or toxic substance or is suffering an unknown illness.
X-Rays
X-rays can determine whether your pet has sustained broken bones or internal injuries from an accident.
Bone Setting
Setting a broken bone and stabilizing it is the fastest way to get your pet back on the path to healing. Managing your pet’s pain is also a priority after an injury.
Surgery
Sometimes emergency surgery is needed to repair internal organs or remove a foreign object.
